Inarajan Falls

inerajan one forty

The town of Inarajan is most famous for a set of pools fed by ocean water that are good for swimming, and also some nice views.

inerajan nine

Malojoj Falls is more of a hidden gem. You drive up to the middle school, and park outside the fence. There’s a road into the jungle, and you follow it out of the trees and into the open plains.

on the trail

The red dirt is pretty and the tall grass is full of ground orchids.

lam lam seventy two

You can even find passion flowers at the right time of year.

lam lam one seventy six

If you follow the trail, it will take you over a stream and into a bamboo forest.

inerajan eleven

Keep going down hill, and you’ll come to the falls. I recommend bringing gloves, because there are ropes you need to hold to get down the steep parts.

inerajan ten

The falls are bigger after the rainy season, but they are nice any time of year.

inerajan thirteen

There is a set of smaller waterfalls when you first come down the slope, and then if you go upstream, you’ll see a taller waterfall.

inerajan twenty one

There’s a nice little spot to sit and listen to the water, and there is even a hammock (above you can see my husband laying in it.)

inerajan nineteen

The owner of the land is fine with people visiting, as long as they clean up their trash. Make sure you pick up after yourself. If you sit and relax for awhile, you will see butterflies come up to drink from the lower falls, and to eat from the flowers that are planted all around. It’s a really nice place to spend an afternoon.

inerajan twenty three

Again, make sure to bring lots of sunscreen and water! Wear plants because some of the plants have thorns, and definitely A hat for crossing the sunny plains.

Green Sea Turtle

close up turtle mouth.jpg

There is a green sea turtle that lives at Fish Eye Marine Park on the island of Guam. We call him Larry, but I have no idea what he calls himself.

Anyway, he is tagged, and I am wondering if anyone on the Internet would happen to know how to look up information on a turtle based on the tag. His number seems to be “PI2775.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

He has a pretty bad injury from what seems to be a boat propeller. His shell is broken in places, and one of his back fins is split in half. These injuries are healed, but the scars are permanent.

He is extremely friendly and seems to really love people, so I think he is from a hatchery or a rescue. If he was born in the wild, I don’t think he would be so excited about people.

So, does anyone know how I might find out more?

Dive Off Agat

me taking a picture

On Guam, most dives are off of a boat.

IMG_0234

This is because it’s hard to walk out past the reefs with tanks on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Mostly, we have bays with a reef at the edge. The good diving is past the reef. However, it’s typically a long walk.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Thankfully, it’s not very expensive to get on a chartered boat dive.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I got my certification through MDA, and so I go on their boat dives.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There are other companies, but they all go the same places.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a small island, so there are only so many places to go.

Dive at Fish Eye

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My husband got dive certified after me, and his instructor let me tag along. (That’s me above; not that you can tell.)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We went to Fish Eye, which I have snorkeled several times. It was interesting to dive there.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The class went around the base of the Fish Eye tourist attraction.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I followed along, and got pictures of them feeding the fish.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There are all kinds of fish, including groupers and barracudas.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was a short dive. We only stayed down for about 45 minutes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

However, we got to see a lot of things in that time, and it was fun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
If you are in Guam, I recommend going to Fish Eye Marine Park.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It is a long walk out from shore, but there is a path to follow under the bridge, so it’s not so bad.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And now, my husband and I are both certified to dive!

Tropical Sunsets

Guam might not have clubs or a lot of job opportunities, but it does have beautiful sunsets. I could post a picture every few days, but it seemed better to put all the sunsets in one Gratuitous Sunset Post.

It turns out that Forty is the maximum amount of photos that this format allows me in one post, so there will definitely be a part two.

These were taken all over the island, but mostly at various spots in Tumon Bay (where I live.)

Dive at Gab Gab

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I got my dive certification recently. It’s inexpensive on Guam. I paid $200 for the class, and was able to do lots of classroom time and several practice dives.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My first dive by myself was with my friends Ashley and Jason. We went to Gab Gab, which is a beach on the Navy Base.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Gab Gab is a nice place to dive because the entry point is a short staircase. Many beaches require a long walk out past the reef, but at Gab Gab you can just walk down the stairs.

best picture

Traveling out past the reef, you can see all kinds of fish and even some sea turtles.

clown town

Hiding in the coral you can find anemones with clown fish living in them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a beautiful beach, but the pictures don’t come out as well as snorkeling pictures because there’s less light lower down.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We had a really good time, but I am still learning.
